Conversation hearts: anyone ever propose with one?

necco sweethearts say marry me - photo sarah gilbert
We love those conversation hearts from Necco (and, what the heck, the knockoffs too, whether they be bitter or sweet or plain obnoxious). When I was a little girl whose head was filled with images of princess hats, men on white horses, and endless gifts of Whitman's Samplers and sugary candy and roses for Valentine's Day, I imagined the time when my sweetheart would express his love with those sweet, sweet hearts.

But it's never really happened as in my dream. When my husband proposed? It wasn't by handing me a candy heart imprinted in pink smudged block letters with "MARRY ME."

Has that ever happened, to you or someone you know? Please do share.

Valentine's day was in teh middle of the week and we were both working so we made plans to go out to eat on Saturday, Feb. 17 2001. My only request was we go somewhere that we had to dress up to go to. When he picked me up he had a box in the console that I kept asking about. He only told me that they were for after dinner. Once at the restaurant we had ordered our food and I continued to bother him about the box. Reluctantly he slid the box across the table and I opened it. Inside were hearts that said Marry Me on them. I had his suit jacket on since it was cold in the restaurant and he said tha tif you reach into the inside pocket you will find another box. Inside that box was my engagement ring. 10 months later we were married.
