This past week in preparation for the Super Bowl, I began a quick list of reasons why Pittsburgh kicks Seattle's butt, and Sarah Gilbert bit back with why she'd take Pike's Place Market over a Polish sausage any day. The Superfood rivalry is just as fun as the game itself!
Pittsburgh might not seem like a very culinary city, but there are quite a few things for which we get to thank the Steel City. Just a few more distinctly PIttsburgh food things to get us into the "Go Steelers!" mind-set:
- We did a little study in pierogi this week, which isn't necessarily Pittsburgh-y, but since Pittsburgh is home to fairly sizable Polish, German and eastern European populations, this Polish comfort snack food is quite appropriate. Can't forget the Polish sausage, either!
- Nicole already mentioned the "Almost Famous" Primanti Brothers sandwich - fries and coleslaw don't come on the side, they're inside!
- McDonald's 560 calorie Big Mac was invented by a Pittsburgh franchise owner, Jim Dellagatti.
- Until this Super Bowl, I had heard of chipped beef, but never chipped ham! Isaly's in Pittsburgh is famous for its chipped ham and other deli hams.
- Klondike Bars, those delicious fat squares of ice cream covered with chocolate, are from Pittsburgh!
- Every time you dip your French fries or squeeze a bottle of ketchup over your hot dog or burger, remeber that Heinz is from Pittsburgh!
- We don't see it much out here on the West coast, but if I did, I'd certainly be drinking Iron City beer from the Pittsburgh Brewing Company.
- Another one that is hard to find on the West coast, the Clark bar, was invented in Pittsburgh - something like the better, more sophisticated cousin of a Butterfinger.
