The outcome of last week's Hot Springs International Corned Beef Eating Championship have sent shockwaves through the
competitive eating community, according to a recent release from the International
Federation of Competitive Eating. The underdog victor of this Arkansas event was a young Chicago upstart named Patrick Bertoletti, who edged out veterans Sonya
Thomas and Joey Chestnut by taking down 11 Oaklawn corned beef sandwiches in 10 minutes. Thomas and Chestnut, the
second and third ranked competitive eaters in the world, tied with 10.75 sandwiches each and Chestnut eventually won
second place in an overtime match. Bertolleti took home $3,000.

Bad table manners aside, my mama called it "pigginess," and we all know that gluttony is one of the Seven Deadlies. Besides, think of the number of mendicants who could be fed with all that food. Really.

Let me put it this way: would you attend such an event as a spectator (I'm not even going to ask if any of you would compete!)? If so, why?? Is food not to be respected??? Are you not appalled at the waste, much less the disgusting "manners" of the participants themselves??

1-22-2006 @4:03PM Nick said... To be honest with you, I'm sort of baffled at the rise in popularity of competitive eating as a "sport." I guess it's a draw similar to the spectacle of a circus--seeing an otherwise average person do something unusual to/with their body. The IFOCE or some of the competitors could probably answer your questions better than I can.
