Weissella soft gingerbread cookies: new product taste test

weissella soft gingerbread cookies with chocolate coating
This photo, it's lovely, no? And you can totally see why I had to buy this cookie. If nothing else, there was the Weissella logo, red and German and totally appealing. Plus, I have to tell you: I adore ginger cookies of all sorts. "Soft gingerbread cookies" spoke volumes to me. And look, just look at the nice chocolate coating. The bottom of the cookie looks a little odd - almost like a thin piece of white paper on the bottom of the cookie. What is that?

Sadly, I still don't know what the white part on the bottom is. It tastes like paper, and has the texture of maybe some crisp, edible vellum. I don't understand. The gingerbread has a nice gingery, clove-spiced tang, and the chocolate coating is very thin and dark, and satisfyingly Hoho-like without tasting of trans-fatty acids.

But the cookie had an off taste to me, like bitterness and boredom. Even as I type this, though, and taste my third one (and, *gulp* *snarffle* it's all gone) - I have this strange feeling that they are going to grow on me. I think I know what's turning me off: they're packed with pulverized nuts and candied fruits, including apricots and orange peel. It's not what I expect in my gingerbread cookie and, frankly, not what I want.

I'll eat the last four cookies in the package, and I'll probably enjoy them. But I doubt I'll buy these again.

So I've tried two of the four new things I found at Trader Joe's this week (and, just for the record, you can find these cookies elsewhere). And not really loved either. Never fear, I'm sure to fall in love with something...

This is a very German speciality (and if they are to be totally authentic, the "white paper" has to be oblates) and they tastes brilliantly when you get the good ones. The factory ones however are overly sweet and cardboardy. Trust me, if you over have the chance to taste one that doesn't come in that kind of box, do it! You won't be sorry, they are sooooo much better!

I expected a chewy, lovely, ginger-ey experience and was apalled by the arid texture. There were even bits of unrecognizable chewy things in there which, combined with the afore mentioned rice paper bottom just made for an unusual experience. Overall though, I do love TJs and this was a rare bad experience.
