I just happened to find myself in Selfridges yesterday, and would you believe it? If you use the side door to get into the food court, you just happen to walk in on a Krispy Kreme franchise - about the only one in the UK. Well what would you do? Faced with their demise, the fact they are supposed to be the best doughnuts since the last lot and that today is D day on Slashfood I just had to buy some. Had to, I tell ye!
Now the stand was resplendent with a big stack of pre-selected boxes. A dozen mixed doughnuts for £7.95. That is just 66p per doughnut. How could I resist?
The train from Paddington was packed. I felt more than a little conspicuous toting the over-sized carrier bag as it was without delving into the contents. It wasn't until nearly midnight when I slit the packaging and piled them onto the plate for the photo session. To be honest, if I wasn't slurping thirstily at a red wine, I would have eaten a couple with little thought then and there; but as we all know red wine and sugar do not mix. Well they do, but it's not pleasant.
A few snaps and I knocked over the glass; it was empty but I took it as a sign. First out of the box was a chocolate coated 'nut that revealed itself to be pumped full of some white fluffy stuff. It was nice. Next was the crinkly brown one drenched in icing with a hole in the middle. Lightly chocolatey. Didn't last long.
A third? Well I have just thrown some coffee into the cafeteria to wash another down. Greed? Nah, research.
