Tequila Distinction

Tequila DistinctionI can't 'do' tequila. Well I can but grief the aftermarth is not pleasant. I did recently try some quality tequila brought back from Mexico by Jeanne (cooksister) and her husband and it was quite, quite different from the usual rough cheap tequila I have tired in the past.

What I didn't realise is that there is a 'T' distinction given to the best tequilas. This 'T' is the industy's top quality designation awarded to companies who have an illustrious history of quality, culture and promotion of Mexicos most famous drink export. The Tequila Regulatory Concul and the National Tequila Industry Chamber combine to award the distinction.

There is more info on tequila than you could possibly need at In Search of the Blue Agave (sadly it hasnt been updated since 2004)  and at Tequila Aficionado.com which seems more up to date with news including the awaridng of the T designation to the producer Casa Noble.

The best tequila I ever had was U.S.$10. bottles of Mezcal from Oaxaca that I got in Nogales that was smooth as water, flavorful, but still had an end taste of fusil oils. I was afraid to drink a lot of it, but it was what I started on for an evening. I got some Sotol outside Ciudad Chihuahua for U.S.17. that put to shame most tequilas over $60. My father, who lived in Mexico, said it was the best tequila he had ever tasted, and he loved the stuff. There are other kinds of agave than the blue agave, and you can get some of the liquor from them here in the States. Of course, I'd rather be drinking them in Mexico.

BTW, most Mexicans still prefer brandy to Tequila, although that is changing. There is a kind of cointreau in Mexico called Controy that is made to turn into margaritas that is still fairly inexpensive if you can find it outside the gringo colonies. Margaritas were originally a stupid drink for tourists to soak up cheap tequila with, but now are getting popular elsewhere in Mexico as a entry level cocktail. Mexico has very decent brandy and rum for low prices, and excellent export quality brandy and rum for not a lot more.
