Slashfood Ate (8): Worst foods you can eat

MSN's report on the Worst Foods to Eat got us to thinking about what our list might be. MSN has nothing on us here at Slashfood. While we think that living a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle is a great choice, unlike MSN “health” advisors, we don’t think it’s the only way to live. We put on our Slash Foodie un-scientifical research hats and here are our picks for 8 of the worst foods you can eat:

  • Deep fried Snickers or Mars bars - This "snack" packs over 450 calories and about 30 grams of fat, and a king size will deliver more than 700 calories and 44 grams of fat. What's more disturbing is that some pubs plate them with a side of fries and call them lunch.
  • Shelf stable “creamers” – Water, sugar or corn syrup solids and partially hydrogenated oils make up this shelf-stable faux cream. Need we say more?
  • Pasteurized, processed cheese food - No, we don’t care how well they melt. These melty, spreadable, day-glo orange “cheeses” have to be labeled as “cheese food” because of the addition of preservatives and liquids. Yum.
  • Burger King Chicken Fries – A tiny amount of chicken with four layers of breading, deep-fried in soybean oil 3 ounces of “fries” with dipping sauce, come up to 340 calories and 24 grams of fat, as well as 1020 mg of sodium per serving.
  • Instant ramen noodles – Very high in both sodium and saturated fat  On the plus side, there is little, if any sugar in these, though you’ll be reaching for something sweet to get the salt out of your mouth.
  • Movie theater popcorn – popped in coconut oil and topped with “butter," a large size has about 20 cups of popcorn and almost three days worth of saturated fat.
  • McDonald’s Sausage, Egg and Cheese McGriddle – only if you want to have over 50% of your recommended daily intake of fat, saturated fat and sodium in a 7 oz. (199 gm) sandwich.
  • Super sized soft drinks – Huge drinks, like the 52-ounce X-treme gulp at 7-11, when filled with sugary sodas, can pack away over 600 calories each!

Go ahead and eat one once a year. They really are tasty and a part of the County Fair experience.

The thing about instant ramen noodles most people don't realize, other than they are salty as hell, is that they are not dried -- they are fried to a state of dryness. This makes them 1. last forever 2. cook quickly and 3. very bad in conjunction with the salt and or MSG the seasonings contain.

Meanwhile, why weren't Twinkies listed? I left one in the yard for 1 month, and it didn't even dry out. And nothing ate it. (including me, I don't touch the stuff anymore).

A calories/fat increase, so does taste.

It is an evolutionary leftover from our ancestors days where nature encouraged to eat fatty, high cal things because they never knew when the next meal would come. Now that every meal is 5 steps away I wonder if we'll evolve out of it eventually.

If we are around that long that is.

The sodium content of ramen noodles is only important if you consume the soup entirely ... that is, most of the sodium is in the soup base, the rest leaches out of the noodles when you boil them. So, you're not consuming the entire amount of sodium listed on the package if you only eat the noodles (for the most part). You can also put half the package of the soup base in instead of the whole thing (or water it down more).

The saturated fats are present because the noodles are deep fried in palm or cocunt oil .. both are high in saturated fats. To cut down, you can boil the noodles in plain water and strain the noodles under warm water .. some of the fats will be discarded with the boil water.

Junk food?? Of *course* I crave it now and then; I am, afterall, only human! As Punisher2K notes, such cravings are a function of evolutionary imprinting. That said, we can ill afford to continue the pre-packaged, over-processed, super-sized, nutritionally void pattern of food consumption so common these days. A recently-posted article here offered distressingly real examples of "Kid Menus," and after reading them, I couldn't help but think of Eric Cartman.

If the public doesn't want these "junk food" items, then the public won't buy them. We should have the option to buy them if we want to. McDonalds could offer their fries both as "Original Recipe" and "New Recipe" (remember "New" Coke?). That's how you tell what the public really wants.

God forbid I should want to travel, or climb a mountain, or swim in the ocean during the short short time on earth that I get. HELLO???!! It's about what you do in life not what you eat that will make life worth living. And to those of you who have the "hey might as well enjoy it" attitude maybe you will get lucky. Maybe reincarnation will turn out to be the final solution. Then you can come back as someone who has a clue.
