I know that I've been posting quite a lot about the food at Ye Olde King's Head, a British pub in Santa Monica, CA, but I can't help it. Ever since my first taste of a Scotch egg, HP sauce, and a Cornish pastie, I think I might have developed a little crush on British food! (And yes, it most certainly helps that Jamie Oliver is absolutely adorable.) I promise that this is the last time I'm going to post about it. I don't have any more pictures after this.
Ye Olde King's Head's menu had a number of items that looked like they belonged on the menu for Ambala Dhaba or Akbar. They were Indian. Now, I'm not completely stupid (just slightly) and know that there is a good deal of Indian cuisine in Britain, but for some reason, I was not surprised that my lamb samosas and accompanying raita didn't taste very Indian at all.
The samosas didn't taste bad. In fact, the mildly spiced ground lamb turnovers with yogurt sauce were quite tasty. They were just very mild in both flavor and heat, shaped into rectangles rather than triangles, and the yogurt sauce tasted like it was flavored with some other spice, not cilantro nor mint. Again, not bad tasting, but not what I would expect for Indian food.
Maybe I need to make a little trip beyond Santa Monica.
