In Honor of the National Champions - The Texas Roll

texas oll from hana sushi, los angeles

Very rarely do I order any of the specialty rolls in sushi bars. For some reason, it just seems blasphemous to me. However, I would like to think that lifting my personal ban on certain things in maki sushi and ordering the Texas Roll at LA's Hana Sushi contributed to Texas' lovely 41-38 win over USC in the Rose Bowl/Championship Bowl last night.

The Texas Roll is basically a Philadelphia Roll with salmon and cream cheese, but with the addition of fresh jalapenos to make it "Texan." (I am already kicking myself for calling out the "Philadelphia Roll" because I had previously refused to acknowledge that it has become a regular, standard item on sushi menus.) The Texas Roll didn't taste horrible, but I am thinking that it only tasted okay as I watched Vince Young sashay across the field to make a TD.

I still very strongly object to cream cheese in sushi. That's just me - I know there are many proponents of creativity in sushi out there.

I also have to agree with the practice of trying to avoid the 'specialty' rolls - sure you can once in a while find some interesting flavour combinations - but I believe that the beauty of sushi, the way that it is best appreciated, is in the simple, standard rolls. That way the true quality and flavour the ingredients can be focused upon, and appreciated.
