Those outside the UK
may not realise what a profusion of flavours that bedeck our crisps (potato chips). Old, old favourites such as Salt
and Vinegar and Prawn Cocktail are now joined by up-market flavours such as roast lamb and mint, asparagus and black
pepper, jalapeno chilli and lemonand sausage and mustard. Oh and marmite.
All of these are made from potato and, usually, are packed to the gills with salt and fat. I hardly ever eat them to be honest. What I did notice the other week was the arrival in my local Waitrose of crisps made from apples. Vegetable alternatives I have long known of - those made from parsnips, beetroot and carrot - but not from fruit.
These particular ones - from Tyrrells - are available in Cinnamon flavour and 'natural' which I guess means apple. Differentiating themselves from potato crisps they are labelled chips. They are not cheap mind. Coming in at 89p for 40g they are double the cost of 'standard' crisps. I brought a packet of each but am not going to get to try them this time around as they are slated for a mystery recipient as part of the Euro Blogging By Post food-parcel exchange. Next time perhaps...
