Top Food Stories of 2005: #5 Finding God in Food

It's that time of year, the time to look back on the stories that made 2005 great. Our countdown begins with God, who appeared several times this year in food.

Grilled cheese, fish sticks and cinnamon buns.

This may sound like the lunch menu at the local high school, but in fact these are all food items on which people claim to have found the likeness of God. Suprisingly, God shows up in mysterious ways on a number of food items.

  1. Nun bun. A cinnamon bun that looked like the Mother Teresa was discovered in 1996 and stolen this past Christmas morning from the coffee shop where it was discovered and preserved. Saints and cinnamon are a good combination.
  2. Virgin Mary grilled cheese. Sold for $28,000 dollars on e-bay, the decade old sandwich was reputed to have mystic anti-molding powers. Could it be that a combination of artificial cheese and Wonderbread had something to do with it?
  3. Jesus in a nacho pan. Evidently, God is all about processed cheese. This time he shows up at the Stadium Club in Jacksonville, Florida, in the bottom of a pan used to keep nacho cheese warm.
  4. Jesus fish stick. A face, perhaps, but the image of Jesus appeared in a burnt fish stick is not a religious sign. It’s a sign that cooking is not your strong suit.
  5. Miracle tortilla. One of the earliest sightings, dating from 1977, this flatbread is said to have the image of Jesus as well as have been rumored to posses healing powers. A shrine is open for visitors in Lake Arthur, New Mexico for those who wish to view it.
  6. Allah eggplant. The name of Allah has appeared at least twice, written in both Arabic and Urdu, in slices of eggplant, proving that religion can strike anywhere at any time, not just in mysteriously marked snack foods and flaky pastry.
If you’re feeling left out by all the discoveries, you can put an icon onto your breakfast food with surprising ease. Just don’t expect it to sell well on eBay.
