I know I disrespected Whitman's Samplers in
favor of See's Candies. But I received an assortment, and guess what? I'm devouring those chocolates right now and
I couldn't be more thrilled to engage in the ancient practice of guessing what's inside each morsel, so I can eat only
my favorites. (It's only fair: I'm the true chocoholic in the family. My kids are too young to quibble and my husband's
happy as long as he has a nice bottle of wine.)
My favorite fillings, in order of how devious I'll be to make
sure I get them:
- Toffee, especially the variety with big chunks of almonds and pecans;
- Coconut cream, a la Mounds bar;
- Caramel, most delicious when it's coated in creamy milk chocolate; and
- Nutty nougat
I'd rather leave the solid chocolates, the "truffle" fillings, the peanuts and cherries and dried fruits for the birds, or, my hapless post-Christmas guests. Rum raisin? Yuck. Those faux-Reese's cups, trying to fancify themselves by using more nut and less butter? Bor-ing. Give me chewy caramel, buttery toffee, rich coconut or give me... Hershey's.

I've found over the years I'm much more fond of boxed chocolates than I used to be. Part of it is that they used to scare me ... who knows what's in there? Then I realized there are very few things that I'm not willing to at least try once and who knows if I'll find a new favorite.
I actually don't like Godiva (molded chocolates always look waxy to me).
Toffee, caramel (the real chewy kind, not the runny stuff), nougats, even truffles if they're not too greasy/buttery are good with me. I have even grown fond of alcohol filled chocolate. Trader Joe's had some fun very vodka filled ones (orange, lemon and raspberry - something like 5% alcohol) that warmed the cockles of my heart.
My father sent me something new for Christmas from Ohio that I'll have to give a try. The one thing I can't argue with is that boxed chocolates are always so fun to look at.
