If you want to surprise a cook, get them a kitchen gadget that they've never seen before. Remove all tags, making
sure to include anything with the product name, wrap it up and make them guess what it is. This guessing game is
something of a tradition in my house and we always have a lot of fun with it. This year's mystery gift was this
tentacled ... well, it took a while to guess what it was. Want a hint? It is light and easy to grip. It can be used by
pressing down the many-armed end or by rotating it.
Give up?
It's a potato masher. It works pretty well, too, since I tried it last night. I already like having larger area to mash with, which is a nice improvement from my old masher.

Oh, I saw that in a magazine! It looks really neat! I'd love to have one - I actually don't mash a lot of potatoes so I don't own a masher yet, but I'm definitely keeping my eyes open for one like that. Very nifty!

Oh my god, I make guacamole constantly and have always liked using a potato masher for it, but that seems even better!
One thing I wish I could find was the bi-level masher my mom found at a Wal-Mart once. It had a spring in the handle, and when you mashed, two normal-but-perpendicular metal mashing elements collapsed into each other. It could mash a bowl of potatoes in about 20 seconds.

Well, mates. Here's a link to a pic of another unidentifable cooking utensil I discovered while studying abroad in London.

I'm dying to know what it is and I was hoping somehere here might be able to tell me. My friends and I took it to be some form of bottle opener, but tried to use it in ways that seemed like they would crack the bottle. It's been a year since I left and I still can't figure it out, please help! I'd be happy to try to describe it more throughly if people ask questions.

the mystery device to me looks like it was designed to hook over the edge of a bowl or othe cooking vessel possible to remove it from an oven etc. It was clearly designed to be used in the position it is in in the photo.
