Gallery of latte art commemorates a fleeting beauty

bird, in latte, by asa jelena pettersson

You can often tell a latte by its cover - the good ones have stiff foam with a lyrical, stylistic floral pattern. The bad ones are chaotic, coffee and foam mixed so there are no distinct spots of white or deep brown. Lattes might be the most fleeting art medium, but they're no less beautiful - or appreciated by coffee fanatics, like me.

The Netherlands, that stylish country, has a fabulous gallery of latte art. I don't know which is my favorite; the bird pictured here; the lion; the bunny; or one of the more stylized patterns, this Moroccan-inspired one, or this fancy floral. Either way, I think it's high time to start demanding more from the baristas in my favorite coffee shops.
