Food Porn: biscuits and gravy at Mother's Bistro

mothers sausage gravy and biscuits

I'm on a quest to find the world's best biscuits and gravy. I adore the dish; it's warm, filling, protein-packed, a little bit spicy and a lot buttery. Best of all? It's usually the cheapest thing on the breakfast menu and seldom leaves me feeling disappointed.

I don't think the dish served at Mother's Bistro in downtown Portland, Oregon is the best anywhere - but it is firmly on my top 10 list. I ate there with my boys on a recent weekday morning and found the gravy to have a nice balance of spice and salt, creamy but not greasy, and the biscuits were tasty. The big drawback: the biscuits must have been "drop biscuits" and were more chewy than flaky, not so easy to cut with the tines of my fork and texturally, not what my mouth waters for. And at $7.95, the dish is a little north of "inexpensive." At Mother's, I think I'll stick with the pancakes from now on.

The best that I've had that I didn't make came from the Dabbs Hotel in Llano, TX (http://www.dabbshotel.com/).

and thanks for the recommendations - I've tried Gravy on Mississippi (try mid-morning on a weekday - much less crazy ;) and will post about it soon - but I haven't tried Meriweathers. I'll check it out!
