Now I know I just did a post about how some recent research suggests that the benefits of alcohol likely don't outweigh it's potential harms, but here's something else to sort of balance that out. A recently published study from researchers at the MAYO Clinic explores possible links between alcohol consumption and weight control. In over 8,000 non-smoking Americans, those that had one drink per day were 54 percent less likely to be obese than non-drinkers. Those that reported drinking a little more, or a little less than one drink a day had similarly low obesety risks when compared to non-drinkers. This pattern goes out the window, however, when dealing with heavy drinkers (four or more drinks per day). For them, the risk of obesity was 46 percent higher than non-drinkers. The reasons behind this trend are still unclear, the study's principle researcher said in a recent Reuters article. He was quick to stress that alcohol consumption, even when done in moderation, is in no way a road to weight loss. He did say that the lower rates of obesity may be related to the lowered risk of heart disease also often linked to moderate alcohol consumption.

The glasses in the picture are Riedel wine tumblers (or at least they're modeled after them). A google search should turn up several retailers.
I have a few around the house and I like them, but be aware that they're incredibly fragile. I once had a friend crack one just by putting too much pressure on it with his hand.

Trader Joe's in LA is selling pairs of these type by Spiegelau for only $9.99. They're a little on the huge side, but for that price, who cares? And they're easier to throw in the dishwasher than the stemmed kind.
