Soda review: Manhattan Special Espresso tastes better than most coffee

The full name of this soda is Manhattan Special Diet Espresso Coffee Soda. I wouldn’t have minded finding the non-diet version of this one, but sometimes you just have to take things as they are. The soda has been produced continuously since 1895, making it the first commercially-available coffee soda. The first ingredient on the bottle is “pure coffee” - making it one of the few bottled coffee drinks that does not use water and coffee flavoring - and you can really taste it. The soda has a small but pleasant amount of carbonation that adds a bit of lightness to what is, at least so far, the smoothest, best tasting bottled coffee drink I’ve ever tasted. It’s better than a fair number of cold coffee drinks I’ve purchased freshly made, as well. The coffee flavor is very rich, but there is no bitterness at all because they have added just the right amount of sweetness. It is very clear that this is a recipe which the company has perfected over the last century. The diet version is so good, I can only imagine how tasty the original is. Manhattan Special produces a whole line of coffee beverages, all of which I now hope to try.

12-08-2005 @10:16AM Rob said... I hear that - Manhattan Espresso is the BOMB. I actually like the diet stuff best. I know a place in Brooklyn where they actually have it on tap. They also make a sasparilla soda that's really good too.
