Chocolate and Calcium

calcium chocolate

People generally consider milk and other dairy to be the primary sources of calcium in our diets, but many people do not want to drink the recommended three glasses per day due to calorie concerns. Adora Calcium is a company that has managed to infuse pieces of milk and dark chocolate with 500mg of calcium, in addition to other vitamins, which is half the recommended daily amount for adults. The chocolates are being marketed as dietary suppliments, enabling women and men to consume enough calcium each day.

Adora does have a lot of appeal when compared to other sources of calcium, as each piece of chocolate contains about 30 calories. The company released a helpful list to drive home both their point and the desireability of their product. I have expanded the list here to illustrate, aside from milk, the amount of food you would have to eat each day to reach the recommended amount of calcium. Each one of the following contains approximate 1000mg calcium:

  • 14 cups cooked broccoli
  • 80 ounces of vegetable juice
  • 6 cups soybeans
  • 37 figs
  • 3.5 cups almonds

Here's what I have to say about them: grainy. Not like sandy grainy, like that stuff that dentists use to polish your teeth grainy. If you just let it dissolve instead of chewing it feels, um, dusty. Definitely not something I'd eat like it was "candy" but for a vitamin it's very tasty.

Trader Joes makes both a fruit and a chocolate version, and Viactiv makes choc, caramel, and mint choc, and Target makes a knock-off of all the Viactivs. They are all 20 calories, and 500 calcium as well.

Rather than a large pharmaceutical company trying to make a calcium supplement taste good, we are a 126 year old chocolate company that added calcium. You won't believe the difference...

I think you will find the lastest formulations (released in October--and made in our Connecticut factory) smooth and tasty. Please email and we will send you a free sample of the lastestt dark for your review. We would love to get your opinion on the new formulation.
