Glowing grapes

grape in microwave

As an adolescent starting to explore the internet, one of the first things I remember bookmarking (aside from that video footage of the exploding whale) was a detailed guide for how to cull a ball of light out of a grape with a microwave oven. I don't believe that what I found this morning is the very same one, but boy was I glad to see it. The extensive disclaimer alone almost makes me want to run out and try it (no, I never tried it with my parents' microwave). Basically, it goes like this: after using a sheet of thermal fax paper to find your microwave's "hot spots" (I think I saw that in Cosmo), you place a grape, cut and dried just so, on a plate and turn on the juice. What happens next is anybody's guess. Electrical discharges arching from one piece of grape to another and causing the sugars to combust? Sounds reasonable.

Also, if you'll notice, it looks like there's a certain pattern on that plate...

"Our suspicion is that the grape halves act as a small dipole antenna for the microwaves. Optimally such an antenna is 1/4 the size of the wavelength, which is pretty close for our grape. The skin flap is a conductor and currents run back and forth across it. As it heats up, it dries out, increasing it's resistance further, causing more heat, etc. Finally it ignites. The smell of burnt sugar fills the oven after it is turned off. The spark will not occur if the grape is too wet. Juice boils up and covers the skin bridge and there is no spark. On rare occasion we noticed rising clouds of luminous plasma (often referred to as 'ball lightning' in other microwave oven web pages."

You don't need to find the thermal hot spot of the microwave though... just place your grape, sliced in two leaving just a tiny membrane attached and microwave them for a few seconds. It works 75% of the time.
