Soda Review: Mint Julep Soda

mint julep sodaA mint julep is a classically southern cocktail that is a combination of mint, bourbon and sugar syrup over crushed ice. The popular and refreshing drink has been around and beloved for some time. There is even a theory (put forth by a distiller, mind you) that the civil war "was brought on by some Yankee coming down south and putting nutmeg in a julep.

This soda doesn’t have nutmeg, but it’s definitely a non-traditional julep, despite the “plantation style” label, because it’s nonalcoholic. Alcoholic sodas worry me somewhat, so that wasn’t a negative for me. Unfortunately, the flavor was. I won’t deny that it was somewhat refreshing, but it tasted like a cross between mint bubblegum and mouthwash: mint flavor with a sweet finish instead of the burning of actual mouthwash. It also wasn’t very carbonated, which I think I would have preferred to break up the sweetness. Overall, it wasn’t great, but if you really like mint, you might want to go for it.
