An Effective Garlic Peeler Hack

Garlic PeelerThere’s nothing like freshly chopped garlic to enliven a dish. Don’t even get me started on the pre-peeled or pre-chopped stuff in a can. It just doesn’t taste the same. And you know it.

But the fact is that we all hate to peel garlic. It’s such a pain, especially when you’re working on a small sliver. But wait, you say there’s a solution? Those rubber things that are sold at high end markets that almost instantly peels garlic just with a few rolls? Wait! Before you go out and buy one of those overpriced things, look around your house for anything that is flat and rubber. I found one of those jar openers that was handed to me free on the street. Wrap the rubber sheet over the garlic slice, and roll the slice back and forth while firmly making contact with the rubber. The garlic peel will easily come off. It’s simple, and no fuss.

11-22-2005 @6:46PM James Yu said... Actually, from time to time, I like the smell on my fingers as well (yes, we're the weird bunch). Sometimes, I just go for the old fashioned crush against my palm and the cutting board (it's a lot more convenient than getting a brick out like what Alton Brown does). Also, I've always found it bad for my knife to crush garlic on the side of the blade.

11-22-2005 @10:31PM Laurie said... Just whack the garlic clove with a knife handle and the peel comes right off. I saw my husband do this the other day, I was so impressed. :-)

11-23-2005 @6:48AM Finished.Law.School said... Take a knife with a large blade, lay it flat on top of the garlic clove and press down with your hand. Flattening the clove like this will break the skin making it muc easier to peel off and discard.
