Tequila seems to be featuring in my life at the moment. It started with some pukka stuff brought back by the Cooksister from Mexico last week. And now the local bar is stocking some exotic looking bottles. So for today's Happy Hour two classic cocktails.
Tequila Sunrise
- 2 shots Gold Tequila
- 5 shots Fresh Orange Juice
- 1/2 shot Grenadine Syrup
Pour tequila and orange into an ice-filled class and stir. Pour Grenadine in a circle around the top of the drink and allow to settle. Garnish with a cherry.
Tequila Sunset
- 2 shots Gold Tequila
- 2 shots Freshly squeezed Lemon Juice
- 1/2 shot clear honey
- 1/2 shot Sugar Syrup
Shake ingredients with ice and strain into an ice-filled glass. Garnish the glass with a sugar rim.

You have got to be kidding me. That stuff is nothing but sugar water with artificial flavoring. I'm not kidding. It is 51% low quality tequila and 49% really nasty cane sugar alcohol (cheap rum, if you will). The color and "flavor" comes from a bit o' caramel flavoring.
It is garbage. Do not ruin otherwise wonderful drinks by bringing Cuervo anywhere near them. A good tequila should be good enough that it can be enjoyed as a sipping drink. No lime or salt necessary.
Try any of the Herradura products or try Hornitos, as it is one of the cheapest good tequilas available. Or use any tequila that is made from 100% blue agave as that, at least, will be a proper tequila.
If you really want a mixtos tequila, try El Jimador. It is cheap and relatively tasty, certainly orders of magnitude better than Cuervo Gold.
