I am a naughty blogger today because I'm not going to do any research about the history of the creamy, dreamy, light green refreshing minty cocktail known as the grasshopper. I 'm not going to look up the origin of the name, "grasshopper" even as it relates to other sweet and minty foods like grasshopper pie. No, I'm just going to blog about how to make a grasshopper in three ways that are absolutely sensational.
The traditional recipe shakes equal parts creme de menthe, creme de cacao, and light cream (or half-and-half) with ice then strains it into a martini glass. You can garnish it as you wish. The obvious choice here is a spring of mint. If you must, use a maraschino cherry as pictured, but just know that if you do, I will never speak to you again. Unless I get another grasshopper.
The second version is sort of a kindergarten grasshopper, made with 1 part creme de menthe, 1 part creme de cacao, then sent for a whirl in the blender with 2 parts of vanilla ice cream. It's basically an alcoholic mint milkshake, so I won't gripe about maraschino cherry.
The last "healthier" grasshopper is lighter, leaving out the light cream or vanilla, and replacing it with an equal amount of...vodka! Same drill of shaking with ice, then straining into a cocktail glass. Now this is a real drink, never mind that it's still seafoam green.
