The Hawkshead Relish Company had their full range available for tasting at the Covent Garden Food Fair. The Onion relish was lovely and caramelised but it was the Gooseberry and Ginger Curd that capitvated and ended up in the bag.
The company has just been awarded Speciality Producer of the Year at the Great Taste Awards, not bad for a company that struggled through the foot and mouth crises of 2001 when their café trade disappeared. It was then that the husband and wife team - Mark and Maria Whitehead - decided to release the relishes, jams and sauces that they made and served in the café to a wider audience by selling them to local delicatessens and farm shops.
These have now become so popular that they closed the café to concentrate on the relishes and bring the range up to 100 different products. They sell via their website which is now added to my shop favourites list in the run up to the Christmas buying spree.

My name is Andrew Bowness, and the lakeside village of Bowness is about 20 minutes from Hawkshead. The wonders of the internet.
