Wine Blogging Wednesday 15 - Small Production Wines

wine blogging wednesday 15 logoIt that time again - Wine Blogging Wednesday! The theme this month is small production wines; wines where less than 250 cases are produced. It's a tricky one and likely to be more expensive than usual as limited availability often equals high demand and consequently higher prices.

A quick trawl through a few participating blogs (technorati tags include WBW+15) reveals some superb choices -

  • Beau at BasicJuice has opted for a Barolo (Silvio Grasso 'Pi Vigne' Barolo, 2000, Italy) US$54 and puts a shout-out for food matching ideas
  • Lenn has selected a Waters Crest Winery Meritage, 2001, USA where just 50 cases were produced and gives a full tasting note on Lenndevours.
  • Catherine at Manage Your Cellar selects the Chaine d'Or Cabernet Sauvignon, 2001, Santa Cruz, California which she describes as "lively with notes of baked apples and butterscotch"
  • Over at Winecast my internet buddy Tim was lucky to receive a sample Sangiovese for a forthcoming podcast that was "made in a garage in a batch of just 84 cases". You can read and hear all about Humanitas L'Huile du Garagiste on Winecast.net.
  • Down in Australia, Tomatom, has selected Red Hill Pinot Noir, 2004, Australia, sounds delicious, while Derrick, continuing his Obsessions,  has picked on a German, gastro-bully that he is, with the Merkelbach Riesling Spätlese, Kinheimer Rosenberg, 2003, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany - a mouthful in more ways than one!

No word, yet, from the host/instigator of this months theme, who happens to be the delightful Fatemeh of Gastronomie-SF. But from just these five blogs a superb array of wines. Sadly my choice, an expensive Rioja, turned out to have a comparatively huge production of 1690 cases!
