The Future of Food

farmers marketABC News alerts us to a new film "The Future of Food," a documentary about the genetically modified food industry. The article describes the movie as a cross  between "The Corporation" and "Super-Size Me." The movie was directed by Deborah Koons Garcia, the widow of Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia, and it explores how genetically modified food is created and why it might be dangerous. According to the article, the movie is a one-sided look at the industry saying that the modified food may not be a safe food source, that it's dangerous to other crops and that the manufacturers of these foods have the right to sue other farmers if their seeds accidentally grow in their fields. The film will be available on DVD later this fall and is currently screening in select theaters around the country.

On the other hand, to be even-handed about it, golden rice that can alleviate vitamin A deficiency and crops engineered to resist pests without recourse to pesticide use might not be all that bad. Yes, lateral transfer of the introduced genes into neighboring receptive plants (not all nearby plants are capable of receiving the introduced genes) could be/will be(?) a problem ... this is a very complex issue. I look forward to seeing the documentary and hope it takes a fair and scientific perspective.
