This photo of a grain of salt and a peppercorn won David McCarthy the overall prize in this year’s Visions of Science Photographic awards.

McCarthy, head of the electron microscope unit at the School of Pharmacy at the University of London, said the photograph was an attempt to get his girlfriend to cut down her salt intake, according to an article in the Telegraph.

The image also took first place in the close-up category.
