A recent report by the U.S. General Accountability Office found that nine out of 10 schools in the U.S. offer students “junk food” that is in direct competition with school lunches.
Foods deemed competitive, while not all necessarily junk food, are those outside of the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs.
Sadly, the decision to eliminate vending machines selling sodas and candy in schools is a tough decision for some adminstrators. Some schools reportedly generate an extra $125,000 every year from the sale of such foods.
