Did you ever want to eat healthier but you didn't know how? Do you have
a million cookbooks that use ingredients in the recipes that you know
you shouldn't be eating but don't know what to replace them with? Look
no further. Each week we will attempt take a conventional recipe and change it
so that it is a healthy, guilt-free recipe. Click on the linked
replacement ingredients below to learn more about them.
- 1 cup sifted cake flour -- We replaced this with whole spelt flour,
known for it's wonderful texture. It is low in gluten and high in fiber and won't spike your blood sugar.
- ½ tsp double acting baking powder -- Make sure to use an aluminum-free
version, like Rumford's.
- 1/8 tsp soda.
- ½ tsp salt -- We used Orsa Pink Mineral Salt,
an unrefined sea salt.
- ½ cup chopped nutmeats -- raw almonds or raw walnuts offer good
nutrition and essential fatty acids.
- 1/3 cup butter or margarine -- Replace this with Virgin Coconut Oil for its meany health benefits, but if you don't like a hint of coconutty
taste, organic cultured butter is a good choice.
- 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed -- Sucanat is
our sweetener of choice here, a pure, unrefined sugar.
- 1 egg, slightly beaten -- Organic, free-range eggs, of course.
- 1 tsp vanilla -- Use pure vanilla extract, not imitation flavoring.
- ½ pkg. chocolate chips -- Tropical Source Sunspire brand has chips that are organic chocolate or grain sweetened, both
healthy alternatives to sugary chocolate chips.
There is no need to change any of the
instructions. The recipe can be
prepared and cooked the same as if conventional ingredients were used.
As you can see from the picture, the recipe was a great success in my house.
