Hershey Buys Scharffen Berger

scharffen bergerIt was recently announced that Hershey will buy California chocolatier Scharffen Berger. Scharffen Berger makes delicious dark chocolate with a high cocoa content. In fact one of their bars, the "nibby" uses not just semisweet chocolate but bits of the cocoa nib too. The challenge for Hershey is to increase brand awareness without diminishing the chocolate's gourmet positioning. It proves that major chocolatiers are aware that average consumer is interested in something a little more flavorful (and that dark chocolate is having a popularity spike). Hershey's rival, Cadbury Schweppes has done a similar thing by acquiring Green & Blacks. The good news is that maybe now Hershey's Special Dark will finally be both special and dark. It's always been my dark chocolate of last resort in convenience stores.
