San Francisco food blogger, Life Begins at 30 has been spearheading the Eat Local in August Challenge. The plan is to get Bay Area folks to pledge to eat only food that is grown or havested within a 100 mile radius for one month. Could you do it? What is it like to eat only what's in season? The goal is to eat as much local food as possible and become more aware of where your food comes from. The Locavores who are running this challenge say that food travels an average of 1,500 miles before ending up on our plates. Pretty scary. In Gourmet magazine's July issue Bill McKibben took on the challenge of eating locally during a Vermont winter. The August challenge is obviously a lot easier but still a bit tricky once you start looking at everything in your daily meal plan. It may make you healthier since processed foods are, for the most part, out and it will definitely be an education on where the foods that are a part of your everyday really come from. Obviously you don't have to be from the Bay Area to try this experiment on your own. Any slashfoodies game for the challenge?
